The Memorial
The memorial will be an augmented reality (AR) experience. Viewers will see a virtual pearl necklace that will appear to drape on Lone Rock in Skull Valley, Utah. The AR necklace will be made of 6,249 “pearls”, one for each of the sheep that died from exposure to nerve agent VX after a chemical weapons test at Dugway Proving Ground in 1968.
Salt Lake City local Kate Ithurralde is creating this temporary memorial to raise awareness of the Dugway Sheep Kill’s influence on US policy regarding chemical weapons testing. More than fifty years after this incident, Dugway Proving Ground continues to conduct open-air chemical tests. Ithurralde hopes that the memorial will spark a civic dialogue about Dugway’s programs.
