AXE THE TAX
The pink tax refers to the tendency for products marketed specifically toward women to be more expensive than those marketed toward men. This phenomenon is often attributed to gender-based price discrimination, however research shows that the primary cause is women sorting into goods with higher marginal costs. This embroidery project brings awareness to the pink tax, showing an unfair weight the pink tax puts on woman.
State Motto Kills State Symbol
Upon reviewing the original "The Grand Beehive" exhibition catalogue written by Hal Cannon, the first images in this exhibition catalogue are three headstones with beehives on them. This was so symbolically striking to me.
For my hexagon, I embroidered images of dead bees on a canvas that connects to the frame. By embroidering dead bees, I am exploring how Utah’s state symbol, the beehive, is also very symbolic of current environmental
fears. In Utah the beehive symbolizes industry and the pioneer virtues of prudence and determination. But in today's environmental climate, bee colonies are dying at alarming rates, their death symbolizes an environmental imbalance. The bee colonies are dying primarily because insects are losing their habitats to farming and urbanization. The use of pesticides and fertilizers is also to blame, and so is climate change. In our local news you can’t be surprised to hear that bee colonies are dying because our public lands continue to be sold and Utah’s has the poorest air quality conditions. This work is part of the Alice Merrill Collection.
